Big Update for American Drivers!

The White House and the EPA are reportedly moving to change how automakers are rewarded for automatic engine start-stop systems — the feature that shuts off your car’s engine at every stoplight and restarts it when you go.

Officials have criticized the system as frustrating for drivers and argue that current regulatory credits have encouraged its widespread use in more than half of new vehicles. Under the proposal, the EPA would revise or remove those credits, which could lead to fewer cars being built with the feature.

Drivers who find start-stop annoying say this could mean smoother, more consistent driving experiences. Supporters of the change call it an example of deregulation aimed at reducing rules that don’t clearly benefit consumers.

Others say automatic start-stop helps fuel economy and emissions, especially in city driving, and could be useful for meeting environmental goals.

What do you think — do you like or dislike the start-stop feature in your car?
