Remulla Responds to China’s Reported Ban on Kalayaan Officials

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has reacted to reports that China imposed a ban on officials from Kalayaan, Palawan, saying he is not concerned by the move and remains committed to asserting the Philippines’ sovereignty.

“I hope they ban me,” Remulla said in response to the reported restriction, signaling defiance amid ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

Kalayaan, a municipality in Palawan, is part of the Philippines’ claimed territory in the Spratly Islands, an area that has long been subject to competing claims in the South China Sea. The region remains a focal point of diplomatic and geopolitical tensions.

Remulla indicated that he plans to visit Kalayaan to reaffirm the country’s position and demonstrate support for local officials and residents. He emphasized that Philippine sovereignty over the area is recognized under domestic law and international legal frameworks cited by the government.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has yet to release a detailed statement regarding the reported ban. Analysts note that developments in the disputed waters often trigger diplomatic exchanges between Manila and Beijing.

As tensions continue, officials say the Philippines remains committed to protecting its territorial rights while pursuing diplomatic channels to manage disputes.
