Universal’s hit musical adaptation Wicked continues its incredible box office run, the project was given some props by Salma Hayek.
The musical adaptation from director Jon M. Chu – which recently broke a box office record for the biggest opening day for a Broadway adaptation – took in $112.5 million in its debut last weekend.
Hayek shared pH๏τos of her on the red carpet with stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo along with a congratulatory message for the whole team.
The highly-anticipated adaptation was nearly two decades in the making, though at one point, Hayek was set to produce a much different adaptation of the musical.
Way back in 2011, Hayek was attached to produce an eight-hour miniseries adaptation of the musical, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, itself based on The Wizard of Oz.

The story is set before Dorothy Gale’s arrival in Oz, as told in the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz.

The novel was adapted for the Broadway stage in 2003 and is currently the fourth-longest-running Broadway show with over 8,100 performances.
Back in 2009, Maguire revealed he sold the musical’s rights to ABC to make a ‘non-musical adaptation’ of Maguire’s novel that will stick strictly to the book.
Two years later in 2011, ABC announced that Hayek and her Ventanarosa Productions partner Jose Tamez would serve as executive producers.
Erik Jendressen (Band of Brothers) was set to write the eight-hour miniseries, though the production never fully got off the ground.
While the TV adaptation fell through, the movie adaptation kept moving along, with actresses such as Lea Michele and Amy Adams floated for the leads of Glinda and Elphaba.
The success of the Broadway hit Les Miserables in 2012 helped spurn the development of Wicked forward, though it would still be more than a decade before it was released.
