The Handshake That Changed Everything

They first met on a quiet afternoon in kindergarten.

His name was Malik. Hers was Elena.

Malik was the only Black child in the class. Elena, with her pale skin and nearly invisible lashes, stood out just as much, though for different reasons. The other children didn’t quite understand either of them. They stared. They whispered. And sometimes… they kept their distance.

That day, the teacher asked everyone to pair up and hold hands for a simple classroom activity.
