Kuba’s Fight for Every Step: Inside a 12-Year-Old’s Battle with Severe Limb Deformities

A Childhood Marked by Pain and Determination
At just twelve years old, Jakub Bandurski — known lovingly as Kuba — has already endured more physical pain and medical intervention than most people face in a lifetime.
Born with severe deformities in both legs, Kuba’s early years were shaped not by carefree play, but by struggle. His legs were visibly bowed, uneven in length, and unable to properly support his body. Standing was difficult. Walking was painful. Running was unimaginable.
What should have been simple childhood milestones became daily battles.
From the moment he first tried to stand, it was clear something wasn’t right. His legs bent under pressure, unable to hold his weight. Doctors soon confirmed that his bones — particularly the femurs and tibias — were malformed, his knees misaligned, and one leg shorter than the other.
For Kuba, every step came with pain.
A Rare Diagnosis Behind the Condition
As specialists investigated further, Kuba was eventually diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder: X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets.
This condition disrupts the body’s ability to regulate phosphate, a mineral essential for healthy bone development. Without it, bones become soft, weak, and prone to deformity.
In Kuba’s case, it meant his legs would continue to worsen over time without intervention. Curvature would increase. Joint instability would grow. Mobility would decline.
The diagnosis brought clarity — but also a difficult truth.
There was no quick fix.
Only a long, complex medical journey ahead.

A Series of Complex and Painful Surgeries
To give Kuba a chance at walking independently, doctors recommended a series of highly specialized orthopedic surgeries.
His first procedures began in 2024.
Surgeons used advanced techniques such as the Blount method and the Ilizarov method — a complex process involving external metal frames attached to the bones with pins and rods. These devices gradually correct bone alignment and length over time.
It is not a single operation, but a slow, demanding process.
Each day, tiny adjustments are made to the external frame — millimeter by millimeter — guiding the bones into a more natural position.
So far, Kuba has undergone twelve major surgeries.
Each one required anesthesia, precision, and long recovery periods. Each one brought hope — but also pain, risk, and uncertainty.
Complications and Setbacks Along the Way
Kuba’s journey has not been smooth.
Like many patients undergoing repeated orthopedic procedures, he has faced complications. Infections developed at surgical sites. Metal hardware sometimes shifted or caused discomfort. Additional corrective procedures became necessary.
Recovery was often slow and painful.
There were days when movement felt impossible. Days when progress seemed to stall. Days when the emotional toll weighed just as heavily as the physical one.
But stopping was never an option.
Because without continued treatment, his condition would only worsen.

Rehabilitation: The Battle Beyond Surgery
Surgery is only part of Kuba’s fight.
Rehabilitation plays an equally critical role in his journey.
Every day, he participates in intensive physical therapy aimed at strengthening muscles, improving joint mobility, and helping his body adapt to structural changes. Therapists guide him through exercises that challenge balance, coordination, and endurance.
These sessions are not easy.
They require persistence, discipline, and a tolerance for discomfort that few children are ever asked to develop.
But they are essential.
Because surgery can correct bones — but rehabilitation teaches the body how to use them.
The Emotional Weight of Growing Up Different
Beyond the physical challenges, Kuba faces something less visible — but equally difficult.
His condition has affected how he experiences childhood.
Running with friends. Playing sports. Moving freely without pain — these are things many children take for granted. For Kuba, they have often felt out of reach.
The visible nature of his condition has also led to moments of social difficulty. Questions. Stares. Sometimes even exclusion.
To help him navigate these challenges, psychological support has become part of his care — helping him build confidence, resilience, and a positive sense of self despite the obstacles he faces.
And through it all, Kuba continues to push forward.

A Family’s Unwavering Support
Kuba is not facing this journey alone.
His father and grandmother stand by him every step of the way — managing daily care, monitoring medical equipment, and supporting him through rehabilitation and recovery.
Their role is constant. Demanding. Essential.
From adjusting external fixators at home to encouraging him through painful therapy sessions, their support has been a cornerstone of his progress.
Together, they form a team — united by one goal: helping Kuba walk independently.
Looking Ahead: Hope for Independence
Despite everything he has endured, Kuba’s journey is far from over.
Doctors have planned at least two more major surgeries to further correct his leg length and alignment. These procedures are carefully timed to match his growth, maximizing the chances of long-term success.
Rehabilitation will continue alongside them.
The process remains long. The outcome is not guaranteed.
But progress is real.
Already, Kuba has begun to bear weight more effectively. One leg has been partially straightened and lengthened. Each improvement — no matter how small — brings him closer to his goal.

A Story of Courage, Medicine, and Possibility
Kuba’s story is not just about a rare condition.
It is about resilience.
It is about what modern medicine can achieve when combined with persistence, expertise, and unwavering support.
And most of all, it is about a young boy who refuses to give up.
Through twelve surgeries, countless therapy sessions, and years of pain, Kuba continues to fight for something many people never have to think about:
The ability to stand.
To walk.
To move freely.
Each step forward is hard-earned.
Each milestone is a victory.
And with every challenge he overcomes, Kuba proves that even the most difficult journeys can lead toward hope.
