A Year in Cyprus: Major Ayesha Shaukat Khan’s UN Peacekeeping Service Earns Official Recognition

Major Ayesha Shaukat Khan of the Pakistan Army has concluded her deployment with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), receiving formal recognition and farewell from the mission upon completion of her service.

On April 1, 2026, the official UN Cyprus communication channels publicly acknowledged her contribution, confirming that she had served for over a year as a Military Public Information Officer. In this role, she also acted as the focal point for uniformed women peacekeepers within the mission.

Her responsibilities included managing media relations and strategic communications related to sensitive developments along the buffer zone — the long-standing demarcation line between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. This area has been under UN monitoring since 1964 and remains one of the most delicate peacekeeping environments in the world.

During her deployment, Major Ayesha’s efforts in highlighting and supporting the role of women in peacekeeping operations were specifically recognized by UNFICYP. Her work contributed to strengthening visibility and understanding of female military participation in UN missions.

The official acknowledgment from UN channels is considered a significant mark of distinction, reflecting the impact of her service within the mission.

Pakistan continues to be one of the largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations worldwide, deploying thousands of personnel across multiple regions. Within that broader commitment, officers like Major Ayesha represent the professional standards and dedication expected in international service.

Her tenure in Cyprus stands as an example of how individual officers contribute meaningfully to global peace efforts, not only through operational duties but also through communication, representation, and trust-building in complex environments.

In closing her deployment, Major Ayesha Shaukat Khan leaves behind a record of service recognized at the international level — a reflection of both personal professionalism and Pakistan’s long-standing role in UN peacekeeping.
