Little Girl Survives Nightmare Pool Drain Accident That Ripped Out Her Intestines
A three year old girl sat in a kiddie pool on a family vacation, seconds away from turning four. Then the drain beneath her turned into a silent trap. Paloma Quatrini was at the Punta Mita Resort in Mexico in February 2025 when the protective drain cover failed. The suction grabbed her small body and would not let go. Her parents, Carolina Velez and Adam Quatrini, fought to pull her free for two agonizing minutes. The force was too strong.

โ€œThe suction was so strong that her small intestine was ripped out of her body,โ€ a family lawsuit states. Finally someone found the pumpโ€™s off switch. Paloma, now five, was airlifted to Childrenโ€™s Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she endured dozens of life saving surgeries. Doctors reconstructed her digestive system after the medical evisceration, a rare and often fatal condition.

โ€œAll of the small bowel was gone,โ€ Dr. Geoffrey Bond told CBS News. โ€œWe brought the colon up and joined the colon to the small bowel, so essentially sheโ€™s connected, but she has no small bowel.โ€ Her parents now connect a line into her body every night for 12 hours to deliver nutrients directly into her bloodstream. She may need an internal organ transplant in the future.

The family has filed a lawsuit against Hayward, the company that made the pool draining system. They refiled in Pittsburgh after a previous case was withdrawn, determined not to return to the place where their daughter almost died.

โ€œA 3-year-old girl should not have to litigate her case in a foreign country where she was almost k!lled,โ€ family attorney Robert Zimmerman told People.

The last thing these parents want is to go back to Mexico. They just want their little girl to keep living. And somehow, against every odd, she is.
