Gulf of Oman — Confusion and alarm are rippling through world capitals after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed it fired four ballistic missiles at the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, a declaration that, if true, would mark one of the most dangerous escalations in decades.

In a late-night address from Tehran, an IRGC spokesman boasted that a “concentrated missile strike” had been launched toward the Lincoln’s strike group, declaring that “no American war machine is beyond the reach of the Islamic Republic.” State television followed with animated clips showing missiles diving onto a carrier deck and triumphant headlines proclaiming “the age of US naval invincibility is over.”

The Pentagon is pushing back, confirming only that multiple ballistic launches were detected from Iranian territory “into the vicinity” of the carrier group. According to initial US assessments, shipborne Aegis defenses and regional missile batteries intercepted several missiles, while at least one fell harmlessly into the sea at a distance. Officials insist the Lincoln remains fully mission capable and that “no direct hit” on the carrier has been verified.

Still, the symbolism is explosive. Even an attempted ballistic strike on a US supercarrier is enough to send oil prices soaring, rattle financial markets and trigger urgent consultations among NATO allies and Gulf partners.

Analysts warn that Washington now faces a stark choice: respond with overwhelming force and risk a spiral into full-scale war, or show restraint and risk emboldening an adversary that has just tried to put its missiles through the heart of American sea power.
