Gulf of Oman — Confusion and alarm are spreading across global capitals after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed it launched four ballistic missiles at the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, a declaration that, if true, would mark one of the most dangerous escalations in modern naval history.

In a late-night statement from Tehran, an IRGC spokesman boasted that “a concentrated missile strike” had been directed at the Lincoln’s carrier strike group, saying Iran had “proven that no American war machine is beyond our reach.” State TV aired computer animations of missiles diving toward a carrier deck, declaring the era of “untouchable US fleets” over.

The Pentagon, however, is pushing back on the narrative. US Central Command confirmed “multiple ballistic launches” from Iranian territory into the general vicinity of the strike group, but said no direct hit on the carrier had been recorded. According to initial assessments, shipborne Aegis defenses and allied Patriot batteries intercepted several missiles, while at least one splashed down harmlessly into open water.

Still, the symbolism is explosive. Even an attempted strike on a US super‑carrier is enough to rattle markets, spur emergency consultations among NATO allies and force commercial shipping to reroute. Analysts warn that Washington now faces an excruciating choice: respond with punishing force and risk a spiraling war, or show restraint and risk emboldening a foe that just tried to put its missiles through the heart of American sea power.
