🌊⚖️ AREQUIPA DEVASTATED BY HISTORIC FLASH FLOODS AS DEATH TOLL RISES TO 22

The city of Arequipa is facing one of the most severe environmental disasters in its modern history as relentless rainfall continues to trigger destructive flash floods across the region. Fueled by the ongoing El Niño Costero weather phenomenon, the intense storms have transformed the historic downtown and surrounding districts into urgent rescue zones.

Authorities have confirmed that at least 22 people have lost their lives. Among the victims are 15 individuals who died in a tragic helicopter crash during a high-risk rescue mission, underscoring the extreme conditions confronting emergency responders. Rescue crews remain on the ground, working tirelessly to reach stranded residents as additional rainfall threatens to worsen the crisis.

The destruction is widespread. More than 5,500 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged after the city’s “torrenteras”—seasonal drainage channels—overflowed with unprecedented force. Entire neighborhoods are now buried beneath thick layers of mud and debris, leaving thousands displaced.

Critical infrastructure has also collapsed under the pressure of the flooding. The regional airport remains closed, several bridges have been compromised, and at least 16 districts are without electricity or access to safe drinking water. Officials warn that the emergency is far from over, as forecasts predict continued heavy rainfall in the coming days.

With communities isolated and resources stretched thin, Arequipa remains on high alert, bracing for further impacts while rescue and recovery efforts intensify across the region.
