Federal agents from the FBI and ICE carried out a dramatic early-morning raid in San Diego, arresting City Council member Miguel Cardinus and exposing what investigators describe as one of the largest cocaine trafficking operations in the city’s history.

According to court documents, authorities seized 5.5 tons, $180 million in gold, and millions in cash from his $15 million La Jolla mansion, along with detailed ledgers outlining an international distribution network tied to cartel figures.

The 22-month federal investigation, known as Operation Gilded Serpent, also led to 34 arrests and the forfeiture of luxury vehicles, real estate, and other high-value assets.
