It began when he was just three weeks old. What should have been a quiet, peaceful start to life suddenly turned into an emergency. He was rushed to the hospital after showing alarming symptoms. The diagnosis came quickly—and it was terrifying: meningitis.

For a newborn, the condition is life-threatening. His small body, still adjusting to the world, was suddenly fighting an invisible enemy. And as if that wasn’t enough, complications followed. Fluid began building inside his brain, increasing pressure, putting his fragile life at even greater risk.

Doctors acted fast. Sage was admitted for intensive care, beginning what would become 37 days in the hospital. For his parents, time stopped. Days blurred into nights filled with beeping machines, medical updates, and moments of silence that felt heavier than words.

Tubes surrounded him. Monitors tracked every heartbeat. And in between all of it, there were prayers—some spoken, many too painful to say out loud.

The next step was surgery. A shunt was placed inside his tiny head to drain fluid and relieve the pressure threatening his brain. It was the only way to give him a chance.

When he survived that procedure, it felt like a turning point. Like maybe—just maybe—the worst was behind them.

Not long after, Sage needed another operation. Another hospital stay. Another night where his parents sat awake, holding onto hope with trembling hands, wondering if this time would be the one they wouldn’t get him back from.
