T.J. Holmes shared a disappointing health update after struggling with serious pain.
“Damn. DAMN. DAMN!!! Hard words for a runner (like me) to hear: ‘You need to stop running,’” Holmes, 47, captioned an Instagram post on Wednesday, November 27. “Post-marathon pain got severe enough that I went back to the doctor who tells me I possibly have a ligament tear … or a ligament strain, at best.”
Holmes is on the mend but has to make some changes to his lifestyle.
“He put me in a brace and told me not to run for the next 4-6 weeks. 😧,” he added. “Guess that gives me enough time to get ready for #NYCMarathon2025. 🏃🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ #RedemptionRun.”
The former GMA3 host has documented the ups and downs of getting ready for this year’s marathon. Holmes surprised his followers in October when he revealed his Achilles “gave out” during the 21st mile of the Chicago Marathon.
“I have a left Achilles injury, but instead of trying to help the left Achilles by putting more weight on my right, my right leg is now injured,” he shared on his and girlfriend Amy Robach‘s “Amy and T.J.” podcast.
Holmes began “compensating by putting more weight and emphasis” on his left leg, which was already injured.
“That is where everything falls apart. That’s why I fell apart,” he detailed. “I catch myself with my right leg going down and, when I do it, I immediately feel the tweak in my right hip and kind of my right ʙuтт cheek.

Holmes, who suffered a previous issue with his IT band, was determined to make it to the New York City Marathon after being taken to the hospital.

“How we got from the starting line to this ⬆️,” he wrote via Instagram. “On a marathon day that included a near repeat disaster, tons of Twizzlers, iPhone chafing, hanging with [New York] Gov. Hochul, and vomiting. Lots and lots of 🤮.”
Robach, 51, meanwhile, shared a more positive glimpse into their experience, writing in her own post, “We finished! First 20 were glorious – last 6 – the toughest I’ve had, ever.”
She continued: “It was a gorgeous day with so many highs and a few lows – a huge thank you to the city of New York for pulling off another incredible day, arguably the best day of the year for the city: a day of community and unity and joy ❤️.”
