The North Water (2021)

Brace yourself for a frozen descent into hell—this haunting 19th-century whaling saga is as brutal and beautiful as the Arctic itself. Jack O’Connell shines as Patrick Sumner, a disgraced surgeon seeking redemption aboard a doomed ship, while Colin Farrell is utterly terrifying as the savage harpooner Henry Drax, a man with zero moral compass. Stephen Graham adds gritty menace as the ruthless captain.
Andrew Haigh’s five-episode miniseries (adapted from Ian McGuire’s novel) is a slow-burn masterpiece of atmosphere: vast icy expanses, creaking ships, visceral harpoon hunts, and unflinching violence that probes the darkness in men’s souls. It’s grim, philosophical, and gorgeously shot—think The Terror meets Moby Dick, with themes of empire, survival, and wretched humanity that linger like frostbite.
Not for the faint-hearted (gore and despair abound), but if you crave intelligent, brooding drama with powerhouse performances, this underrated gem is essential viewing. Chillingly brilliant!
